KEN SCHRADER:  “… I’m pretty much self-taught.”

NASCAR makes the first of two road course visits of the season this weekend at Infineon Raceway in  Sonoma, California.  Ken Schrader, driver of the #21 Little Debbie Ford Fusion for Wood Brothers Racing answers fan questions about the Lucky Dog rule, road racing, the number of Ford teams currently in Cup and his test at Kentucky.   Although Schrader may not be the first name that comes to mind when road course racing is mention, the Missouri driver has four top-fives and 10 top-tens on his road course racing resume.

I know that last year, you felt unfairly treated by how NASCAR implemented the "Free Pass/Lucky Dog" rule with you at Infineon. Did they ever offer up an explanation, or has there been any discussion of altering it for road courses since?  “No.  We had one thing in the pits that messed us up.  But they did change it because Jeff Gordon had trouble getting around (the track back to the pack), and they realized they had a problem.  They just start them quicker now.  They let the “lucky dog” go around earlier on the course now.”

Have you learned anything from Boris Said about road racing?  “No.  When I first started I went to a couple of things, but I’m pretty much self-taught.”

With only 8 full-time Ford teams in Cup, does that put Ford at any kind of disadvantage? Would it help the Wood Brothers if there were other small Ford teams out there?  “Yes.  Traditionally the more cars a manufacturer has, a little more information gets around.  And, the more cars in your immediate team; of course that is a help so I don’t see more smaller teams helping.”

How did your test go in Kentucky?  “It went pretty good.  We tried some different stuff.  Kentucky has a lot of grip.  That part is always neat.  We got the car where it sat better and drove better, so it was good.”
