KEN SCHRADER: “When you unload the car at the track
on race weekend that is the car you run,
unless you crash it before the race.”
Ken Schrader, driver of the #21 U.S. Air Force Ford, answers his fan’s questions concerning performance, schedules and the testing policy this week.
Don't you wonder what the possibilities of the original Indy car could be for the 1.5-2 mile tracks? Can you bring your Pocono & Indy cars to California to test prior to qualifying? “There are six tests mandated by NASCAR and they are held on certain dates at certain tracks (Daytona, Vegas, Richmond, Charlotte Indy and Homestead.) There is no Cup test at California right before the race, so the answer to the question is no. When you unload the car at the track on race weekend that is the car you run, unless you crash it before the race. Now, the reason we used the other car even though we had a good test at Indy was because the wind tunnel tests showed that it was better balanced. We put all the stuff from the test on that car and at Indy and Pocono it ran good and at Michigan it wasn’t bad, so I imagine we will take it to California too. The car we used at the Indy test may be the back-up. That will be up to Fatback and the guys at the shop.”
What are the chances Kenny is still in Michigan (asked right after August race at MIS)? “We usually leave a track as soon as possible after the race. We have to get home to get started with our schedule for the following week, and also to be in Charlotte for the Inside NEXTEL Cup taping. Once in a while we might stay in an area after a race for a sponsor appearance or something, but usually sponsor appearances are scheduled right before and during race weekends rather than after.”
I'm a new fan of this forum, my boyfriend and I follow NASCAR and our favorite driver is Kenny. When are you going to push forward and get in the top fifteen more? “We’re trying. Things are going good with Michael (McSwain). We just have to take it one step at a time. We’ve seen good results four of the last five weeks. Without a teammate, it is more difficult, but the crew is really working on it.”
